Dystopia almost always implies dysfunctional society. In HEART OF A HERO, this is certainly true. In this world, the rich built their own city surrounded by a wall to keep the "undesirables" out. If that doesn't stop them, the armed soldiers will. Instead of focusing on making a world a better place for all survivors, the haves and have-nots division is even greater in this messed up world. Kallen is a boy who survived the outside and made it into a place like Eden. It's a completely different world. He earned his spot by serving as a soldier and helping to end the war against the enemy who wants to bring the "Towers" to ruin. It's basically being at the wrong place at the right time.
Kallen's number one enemy is Lorn. Lorn is the brother of the man who is now deemed a spy. Lorn's brother is called a spy because of Kallen. Lorn doesn't believe it and he confronts Kallen, head on.
This story is easy to follow and the conflict is predictable. The sex in here is erotic with very little kink. There isn't any BDSM but there is an interesting threesome where the third participant is a sex doll. What is surprising is the ending. The punishment did not fit the crime in my mind. It felt forced. Since this sets up for the next book, it is understandable why the story ended the way it did. Overall this was a quick and enjoyable read. It's recommended for m/m lovers who enjoy dystopian themes.
